Type 2 Diabetes - Is Hearing Loss More Common in People With Diabetes?

In January of 2018, the journal Acta Otolaryngology reported on a study of hearing in people who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Scientists at the Capital Medical University in Beijing, China found having prediabetes or full-blown Type 2 diabetes can raise the risk of hearing problems.

43 healthy participants.The researchers performed hearing tests on all the participants and used a medical history questionnaire to learn which of the participants suffered ringing in their ears. They found...

45.1 percent of the participants with Type 2 diabetes had hearing loss, compared to

23.6 percent with prediabetes, and

25.6 percent of the healthy participants.A significantly high number of the participants diagnosed with prediabetes reported they had ringing in their ears.

The investigators linked Type 2 diabetes with hearing loss involving the auditory nerve, or 8th cranial nerve that carries impulses from the ears to the brain. The loss of hearing was especially marked when the participants were tested with high-pitched tones. The researchers recommended people diagnosed with prediabetes with ringing in their ears be screened for hearing loss.

That study was consistent with earlier work performed in Aurangabad, India and reported on in November of 2016 in the Journal of Clinical Diagnostic Research. Investigators used the Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) to compare hearing in people with Type 2 diabetes who had healthy blood sugar levels versus those with poor control. They suggest BERA testing be performed on people with Type 2 diabetes to detect central nervous system damage.

The BERA test is especially helpful in assessing hearing in newborns and young children, although it can be used at any age. When sound enters the ear, it is converted to electrical impulses that are sent on to the brain for interpretation. BERA uses electrodes placed on the scalp and attached to an instrument, graphs electrical impulses to show how much time it takes the impulses to travel. A delayed amount of time indicates slowed conduction and nerve damage due to the effect of sugar on nerve fibers.
